Download CentOS 6 Minimal ISO (6.10) – 64-bit & 32-bit

Download CentOS 6.10 Minimal ISO for 64-bit and 32-bit systems

Looking to download CentOS 6 Minimal for a legacy application, an older virtual machine, or a compatibility test? You can still get the CentOS 6.10 Minimal ISO from the official CentOS Vault archive, with separate images for 64-bit and 32-bit x86 systems.

This guide puts the download links first, then explains how to choose an image, verify its SHA-256 checksum, and prepare a basic installation. It also covers common problems with archived downloads and package repositories.

If you are preparing a Linux VPS for remote administration, you may also find RoyalHost’s Download PuTTY for Windows and Linux guide useful for connecting to the server over SSH after installation.

Before you install: CentOS 6 reached end of life on November 30, 2020. It no longer receives updates from the CentOS Project. Use it for controlled legacy work, rather than a new public-facing server. The official CentOS end-of-life notice explains the move to the archive.

Download CentOS 6 Minimal: Official ISO Links

CentOS 6.10 is the final point release of CentOS 6. If you need CentOS 6 and have no requirement for an earlier point release, start with the 6.10 image below.

ArchitectureMinimal ISO filenameArchive size labelDownload
64-bit x86 (x86_64)CentOS-6.10-x86_64-minimal.iso406MDownload 64-bit ISO
32-bit x86 (i386)CentOS-6.10-i386-minimal.iso356MDownload 32-bit ISO

The size labels above are taken from the archive listings; your browser may display different units. These are installer images, so their download sizes do not describe the disk space needed by an installed system.

If a direct link does not open, browse the official 64-bit ISO directory or 32-bit ISO directory. Each directory also contains checksum files and other installation images.

CentOS Vault is an archive. It preserves historical files; it does not provide ongoing security fixes for CentOS 6.

What Is CentOS 6 Minimal?

CentOS 6 belongs to the historical CentOS Linux family, which rebuilt Red Hat Enterprise Linux source packages into a community distribution. The Minimal ISO installs a small operating-system foundation instead of a full desktop environment.

After installation, expect to work primarily at a command prompt. A minimal installation is a starting point: you add the application packages and services required by your particular workload.

That makes the image useful when you want to recreate a legacy environment without installing unrelated desktop applications. It does not mean that every old application will run immediately. Its runtime libraries, dependencies, and configuration still need to match the software you are testing.

Minimal ISO vs. DVD ISO vs. Netinstall

Image typeMain purposeWhen to choose it
MinimalInstall a small base system from local mediaYou need a basic command-line environment
DVDProvide a broader collection of installation packagesYour legacy setup needs more packages available on installation media
NetinstallStart an installation that uses an external installation sourceYou already have a working, compatible archive source configured

For a straightforward legacy lab, the Minimal ISO avoids making the initial base installation depend on a remote package source. Additional software may still require archived repositories afterward.

Should You Download the 64-bit or 32-bit Version?

Choose x86_64 for an Intel or AMD 64-bit environment unless your legacy requirements call for something else. Choose i386 when reproducing a 32-bit operating-system environment or working with compatible older hardware.

An application being 32-bit does not automatically require a 32-bit operating system. Check the application’s documentation and dependency requirements before choosing an image.

These downloads are x86 images, not native ARM images. On an ARM computer, including an Apple silicon Mac, running them requires suitable x86 emulation; simply attaching the ISO to an ARM guest will not make it compatible.

When reproducing an existing server, record its architecture and installed release first. On a running Linux system, these commands help identify them:

uname -m
cat /etc/redhat-release

Keep that information alongside your application version, package list, and backups. Recreating the right environment is more useful than selecting an ISO only because its filename looks familiar.

How to Verify the CentOS 6.10 Minimal ISO

Verify the downloaded file before attaching it to a virtual machine or writing installation media. A filename alone cannot tell you whether a download completed correctly.

The official CentOS 6.10 release announcement publishes these SHA-256 values:

64-bit Minimal ISO SHA-256

CentOS-6.10-x86_64-minimal.iso

7c0dee2a0494dabd84809b72ddb4b761f9ef92b78a506aef709b531c54d30770

32-bit Minimal ISO SHA-256

CentOS-6.10-i386-minimal.iso

cfa7d1808ab1ef4821276b18e05f4a4a7d15560a6a2d8e31caf2fa07fd4cd252

Check the download on Linux

Open a terminal in the download directory and run:

sha256sum CentOS-6.10-x86_64-minimal.iso

Check the download on macOS

shasum -a 256 CentOS-6.10-x86_64-minimal.iso

Check the download on Windows

In PowerShell, use:

Get-FileHash .\CentOS-6.10-x86_64-minimal.iso -Algorithm SHA256

For the 32-bit image, replace the filename in the command with CentOS-6.10-i386-minimal.iso. Compare the entire result with the matching value above; uppercase and lowercase hexadecimal letters represent the same hash.

If the values differ, do not install from that file. Download it again from the official archive and repeat the check. Also confirm that you compared the Minimal image against the Minimal checksum, rather than a DVD or Netinstall checksum.

A matching hash establishes that your file matches the published reference. It does not make an unsupported operating system secure or give it new updates.

Preparing a CentOS 6 Minimal Test System

A disposable virtual machine is a practical place to start. You can separate the experiment from your everyday computer, take snapshots, and discard the guest when testing is complete.

For a basic lab, consider the following starting allocation. These are practical planning suggestions, not official minimum requirements or a guarantee for every installer and application:

  • CPU: 1–2 compatible virtual CPUs.
  • Memory: 1–2 GB RAM, with more for demanding legacy applications.
  • Storage: A 10–20 GB virtual disk for the OS, logs, packages, and test data.
  • Network: An isolated or restricted connection appropriate to the test.
  • Installation media: The verified ISO for your selected architecture.

Allow extra disk space for database imports, application files, and backups. A small installer download can expand into a much larger working environment.

If you install on physical hardware, check driver compatibility first. New storage controllers and network devices may not work with an operating system of this age. The historical RHEL 6 hardware guidance provides useful background on the platform’s installation expectations.

How to Install CentOS 6 Minimal

1. Create the VM or prepare installation media

Create a guest with the architecture matching your ISO, allocate its resources, and attach the file as a virtual optical disc. Use a new virtual disk so that the installer cannot overwrite an existing system.

For physical hardware, use a bootable-media utility that supports the image and your machine. Writing installation media replaces the selected device’s contents, so verify the destination and back up anything you need first.

2. Boot the installer

Boot from the attached ISO or installation media and follow the installer prompts. If a media test is offered, it provides another opportunity to detect a damaged image or faulty media.

The CentOS release announcement notes that the x86_64 Minimal ISO should work on UEFI systems with Secure Boot disabled; i386 images do not boot through UEFI. For a dedicated legacy VM, a BIOS firmware configuration is often a useful starting point when troubleshooting boot compatibility.

3. Configure the installation

Choose the language, keyboard, time zone, hostname, and root password. Configure networking according to your lab design rather than connecting the guest publicly by default.

Review the storage destination and partitioning carefully. Automatic partitioning can be convenient on an empty test disk, but confirm that the selected disk contains nothing you intend to preserve.

4. Finish and boot from the installed disk

Complete the installation and restart the guest. Detach the ISO or change the boot order if the installer starts again. Log in through the local console and confirm the installed environment:

cat /etc/redhat-release
uname -m
df -h

These checks show the release, machine architecture, and filesystem space. Expect a terminal-based environment rather than a desktop login screen.

5. Take a clean snapshot

Before installing your legacy software, save a snapshot of the clean guest. Record the ISO checksum and VM configuration so another administrator can reproduce the setup.

Use synthetic or sanitized test data where possible. Keep any necessary network access narrowly scoped, and remove the environment when it has served its purpose.

Common CentOS 6 Download and Installation Problems

The download link returns an error

Open the architecture’s archive directory and select the exact Minimal filename. Older tutorials may point to mirrors that no longer distribute CentOS 6.

If the archive is temporarily unavailable, retry later. When evaluating an alternative archive mirror, compare the downloaded image against the official SHA-256 reference before using it.

The ISO will not boot

Check the checksum, guest architecture, attached optical drive, and boot order. An x86 image requires an x86 guest or appropriate emulation. A 32-bit image also needs a compatible boot mode.

If the guest boots the installer repeatedly after installation, detach the ISO. If the installer cannot see a disk, review the virtual storage controller and its compatibility with the old guest.

YUM reports mirror or repository errors

A fresh installation can contain repository settings that reference obsolete infrastructure. CentOS 6 packages were moved to Vault, so historical mirror settings may need to be replaced with architecture-specific archive URLs.

Back up /etc/yum.repos.d/ before editing repository files. Use the CentOS 6.10 base, updates, and extras archives as appropriate, and keep RPM signature verification enabled. Do not mix packages from different major CentOS releases to bypass dependency errors.

Restoring archive access only makes existing historical packages available. Even a successful package update does not restore CentOS Project security support.

HTTPS downloads fail inside the old guest

Check the system clock, certificate trust, and exact error message. An old guest’s TLS software may also be incompatible with a current server.

A practical option is to download the required file on a supported computer, verify it there, and transfer it into the isolated lab through a controlled channel. Avoid treating disabled certificate checks as a routine fix.

An application or control panel will not install

Check the vendor’s supported operating systems and required package versions. Availability of the CentOS 6 ISO does not imply that a current control panel, database, or web application still supports it.

If a legacy application requires a particular build, preserve its installation files and documentation with the lab. If it has an upgrade path, test that path on a separate supported system.

Choosing an Operating System for a New Server

For a new hosting environment, start with a currently supported operating system that your applications and control panel support. If you want a familiar enterprise Linux environment, review the supported releases of AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux.

Choose by application compatibility, hardware requirements, support lifetime, and maintenance needs. A newer version number alone is not enough to decide whether an OS fits your workload.

For an existing CentOS 6 server, plan migration as a separate project. Build a supported destination, test the application and data restore, check scheduled jobs and integrations, then arrange a controlled cutover with a rollback plan. Do not assume that changing repository URLs can turn CentOS 6 into a modern supported distribution.

If the workload needs root access and dedicated resources, compare it with RoyalHost’s USDT VPS Hosting article before choosing a new environment.

CentOS 6 Minimal Download FAQ

Can I still download CentOS 6 Minimal?

Yes. The official CentOS Vault archive lists CentOS 6.10 Minimal ISO files for x86_64 and i386. Use the direct links near the top of this guide and verify the matching checksum.

What is the last version of CentOS 6?

CentOS 6.10 is the final point release. Its ISO is an installation starting point, not a promise that it includes every package update released before end of life.

Is CentOS 6 Minimal free?

Yes, the archived CentOS installation images can be downloaded without a purchase. Hosting resources and any separately licensed applications may have their own costs.

Does the Minimal ISO include a desktop?

It is intended for a minimal installation, rather than a full desktop. Plan to use the command line and install only the additional packages needed by your legacy workload.

Do I need internet access to install it?

The Minimal ISO provides local installation media for the base system. Extra packages require a suitable source, such as an archived repository or prepared local package collection.

Can I use it on a VPS?

That depends on the provider’s virtualization platform, image options, and custom ISO policy. Ask before ordering; this article does not imply that RoyalHost offers CentOS 6 as an installation template.

Does CentOS Vault provide new security updates?

No. Vault preserves old content. It does not continue CentOS Project security maintenance for CentOS 6.

Is it suitable for a new production website?

Choose a supported operating system for a new public-facing website. Reserve CentOS 6 for a documented legacy requirement and keep the environment restricted while you work toward migration.
